Berlin Art Week

07 Sep 2016

Berlin Art Week will take place for the fifth time this year, bringing you not one but two art fairs, top shows, art awards, and an exciting programme featuring talks, films, and tours.

To help you navigate Berlin's busy art scene, we've highlighted shows that left an impression on us. Scroll down for the full programme.

Halil Altindere at n.b.k.

"If no country wants them, let's settle the world's refugees on Mars." Halil Altindere developed the Space Refugee project for n.b.k. that with ironic distance suggests outer space as the ideal place for refugees in the face of European fears of foreign domination.

Jérôme Bel: "Jérôme Bel" (1995) at HAU2

Jérôme Bel is considered one of the most radical and paradigm-shifting choreagraphers of our time. The radically pared-down "Jérôme Bel" which focusses on lighting, music and the body, is one of the most anticipated performances this week.

Andreas Greimer at Berlinische Gallery

Berlin-based artist Andreas Greimer is the winner of this year's GASAG Kunstpreis. Andreas Greiner studied under Olafur Eliasson at his master class for Berlin University of the Arts, also graduating from its Institute for Spatial Experiments. He poses questions about the individual and the species and challenges the anthropocentric vision of our Western culture.

Goshka Macuga at Schinkel Pavillion

Inside the octagon of Schinkel Pavillon sits a talking android of male appearance. It's a hybrid between machine and doll, resembling a human being in physiognomy and behaviour.

Anne Imhof at Hamburger Bahnhof

Anne Imhof's second instalment of Angst is a hybrid formation combining choreographed actors, falcons, sculpture, musical composition and the painterly act of their emergence. It will premiere on 14 September from 8 pm to 1 am. Performances will take place on 15–18 and 22–25 September, from 8pm–12am. Free admission for everyone.
