Art to See

04 Nov 2016

by Vincent Honoré

November always feels like a quieter, sober time in London after the energy of Frieze week. At DRAF we're focusing on research -

on Saturday 12th November artist Justin Fitzpatrick considers 'digestion' in our current exhibition Streams of Warm Impermanence; the following Saturday (19th) our symposium Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes presents research into flesh as cultural material since 1980s. Galleries may be less raucous, but there is still a lot on - so put on a scarf have a look!

Donna Huanca at Zabludowicz

Donna is an amazing artist who has four works in Streams of Warm Impermanence, our current show. Her solo presentation at Zabludowicz - their first performance-led commission - is very impressive, and includes daily performances by painted models.

Roman Ondak at SLG

This is Roman’s first solo show in London for almost a decade, presenting new work looking at the idea of time. We were lucky enough to present a performance at DRAF by Roman during our annual Evening of Performances last month.

Tender Touches at the Austrian Cultural Forum

Renate Bertlmann is one of my icons - her radical yet sensual works from the 1970s still speak of sex, love and gender today. I am honoured to be speaking with her on 3 Dec. This group show at the Austrian Cultural Forum takes its title from her 1976 series, and presented alongside works by a younger generation of women artists, including the brilliant Glasgow School of Art graduate Zoe Williams.

Turner Prize 2016 at Tate Britain

This year, the Turner Prize shortlist comprises four brilliant and very deserving artists. We were lucky to include some of Anthea Hamilton's fabulous work in Abstract Cabinet in 2013, and commissioned Michael Dean for a performance in October that year. It's a strong year and I'm intrigued to see who win in December.

Bowie/Collector Parts I, II & III at Sotheby's

One of the most extraordinary displays in London this week has to be the collection of the late David Bowie in advance of its sale at Sothebys. I cannot wait to see some of the 1980s experimental furniture - the intersection between design and art - the role of "decor" in exhibition-making - is a current research interest. In addition, the perhaps more surprising quantity of modern British works - Hitchens, Minton, Bomberg, Sutherland etc - shows the eye and taste of a true committed collector, and an opportunity to see some of these rare works before they are sold.

Philippe Parreno Turbine Hall Commission at Tate Modern

The Turbine Hall commission is well into its second decade, and is now a fixed part of not just the art world but the public calendar. It shows the extraordinary changes over that time in the UK public's attitude to contemporary art. The project is of course a huge moment of visibility for an artist, but also a very challenging brief, to respond to such an enormous and familiar space. Philippe Parreno has wired Tate's sound and lighting facilities, to a single console, allowing the building itself to be 'played' like a musical instrument, and producing a mesmerising installation.

Vincent Honoré is Chief Curator of DRAF, directing an ambitious programme of exhibitions, performances and research with emerging and established artists. He co-founded the publication Drawing Room Confessions and contributes to cura magazine.

He curated the group exhibition Streams of Warm Impermanence (DRAF, to 10 Dec), which considers flesh as site for identity in the works of emerging and historical artists. On 19 Nov, a free symposium Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes. Cultural perspectives on flesh from the 1980s to now invites art historians, writers and activists Cadence Kinsey, Olivia Laing, Matthew McLean, Tommaso Speretta and Simon Watney. On 3 Dec, Vincent is joined in conversation by influential feminist artist Renate Bertlmann.
