by Gabrielė Fedaravičiūtė

ArtVilnius‘16 kicks off this week. The only international contemporary art fair in the Baltics will be held for the seventh time this year, hosting dozens of galleries and displaying hundreds of artworks from all around the world.

The Lithuanian capital has plenty more to offer beyond the fair. Our Baltics correspondent Gabrielė Fedaravičiūtė suggests five events and exhibitions worth your time.

Povilas Ramanauskas. Domestic Life at Pamenkalnio Gallery

Visual artist Povilas Ramanauskas focuses on expanding the perception of painting. His current exhibition Domestic life at Pamenkalnio Gallery is a reflection on art and everyday life switching roles, and the comparison of both these areas. Last chance to see!

ArtVilnius’16 at LITEXPO

Hosting dozens of galleries and displaying hundreds of artworks from all around the world, ArtVilnius’16 is the only international contemporary art fair in the Baltic region. Along with guest exhibitors, a large exhibition of sculptures, installations and performances entitled TAKAS (eng. Path), the fair will be presenting 24 artists from Lithuania, Latvia, the Netherlands, Poland, Germany, and Denmark. Visitors to the art fair will also have the opportunity to see a variety of different projects: renowned artist Vladimir Tarasov will show his new audio-visual installation; Jonas Mekas Visual Arts Centre will present a participatory project entitled “Generating the substance of proto-creative swarms/Converter & 3D”; Lewben Group will display the collection of the Lewben Art Foundation and present an exhibition entitled “Shaping Ideas: Sculptures”, which includes artworks by such artists as Hans Op de Beeck, Jake & Dinos Chapman, Michael Dean, Marcel Dzama, Kendell Geers, Petrit Halilaj, Thomas Houseago, Bertrand Lavier, Mandla Reuter. Bringing into one huge space such a variety of contemporary visual artists and their work, ArtVilnius’16 is most certainly one of the must-visit places this time around!

Culture Night Vilnius

Culture Night invites its visitors to enjoy the culture and arts of the city in the darkness of the night. The event is spread all around the capital of Lithuania with around 200 various events, performances and projects during the night from 17th to 18th June, 6pm to 2am. The most unexpected spaces in Vilnius are filled with projects of various artists and the cultural and educational organisations of Lithuania: public squares, streets, parks are filled with art installations, music, performances, dance, theatre, cinema, photography... you name it!

Sharon Ya'ari. Positive Images for Field and Forest at National Gallery of Art

Positive Images for Field and Forest is one of Sharon Ya'ari’s biggest solo exhibitions in Europe and his first in Lithuania. Ya’ari creates large-format images of condensed content that are carefully constructed. Invoking photography as a means of visual thinking, his work is also meant to show the exposure of layers of cultural history and today’s reality.

The Network Architecture Lab: Detachment at Contemporary Art Centre

The Network Architecture Lab is an experimental think-tank based in New York City. Its main aim is to investigate how digital technologies and telecommunication networks impact architecture and society through research and exhibitions. Their show Detachment brings together photography, furniture-sized installations, and a large central object - all of which invite the viewer to rethink and understand our dependence on mobile devices, how they shape us, our society and our interaction with each other.
