Meet Mira Loew

20 Jan 2016

Austrian born, London based artist Mira Loew is interested in exploring the human body. We caught up with her during London Art Fair.

The Austrian born, London based artist is one of our picks from this year's London Art Fair. The exploration of the human body is a central theme to her work, including nudes, portraiture and recently the investigation of the correlation between performance and photography.

ArtRabbit caught up with her during London Art Fair:

AR What is the main focus of your work?

ML I work mainly with the body, movement and performance through the medium of photography. It emerges from a deep fascination with the expressiveness of the human body and the particularities of each individual’s movement signature. Exploring how personal narratives influence the way we move and how that shapes our corporeal understanding, I work with my own body and collaborate with movement artists and performers regularly. I think about body and space. About claiming and occupying space, navigating as understanding space, and positioning within space.

AR What has been a main source of inspiration for your practice?

ML I draw a lot of inspiration from my own biography, from experiencing the world though the particularities of my own body and the spaces I inhabit. Artists such as Claude Cahun, Francesca Woodman, VALIE EXPORT, Yvonne Rainer, Egon Schiele and Kiki Smith have had a big impact on my work. I also watch a lot of contemporary dance. William Forsythe and Sasha Walz’s work are among my favourites.

AR AR What would you like your viewer to take away from your work?

ML I love it when my work makes people smile. I love it when they wonder how an image was taken, or what a body was or wasn't able to do.
