Syllabus VII: Alternative learning programme for artists in the UK

The second annual Irene Yamamoto Arts Writers Fellowship will provide $5,000 unrestricted awards to two emerging arts writers of colour who write critically about theatre, dance, and/or performance art. This opportunity is offered through the Daniel K. Inouye National Center for the Preservation of Democracy at the Japanese American National Museum, with support from Critical Minded.

Eligibility: Reside in or be a citizen of the US; Be at least 18 years of age; Identify as a member of a community with ancestry in one of the original peoples of Africa, Asia, the Americas, Oceania, or Pacific Islands; Have less than 2 years of publication experience, which may include a blog or self-publishing; Have demonstrated a commitment to writing about theater, dance, or performance art.

The residency will also coincide and run as part of East Quay’s offering in this year’s Somerset Arts Week Festival, taking place between the 21 September - 6 October 2024.

Eligibility: We are accepting applications from individuals, groups, and collectives working in all mediums. There is no age restriction. This opportunity is for an artist/s living and/or currently based in Somerset, or with a past connection with Somerset.

They will curate and hang an exhibition for our public gallery space for the Day of the Dead Festival (28th Oct – 9th Nov).

Science Gallery Monterrey at Tecnológico de Monterrey is inviting artists, researchers, community activists and critical thinkers, to submit proposals for existing artistic and research projects to be part of their inaugural show “Brave New Future,” which will open in September 2024. "Brave New Future" is an exhibition that presents different visions of what comes tomorrow, an expedition into different futures foreseeing unknown environments of bright, wonderful societies or of catastrophic singularities, all presented from different perspectives and forms of imaging and imagining.

Eligibility: .Anybody who takes an interdisciplinary approach and who has something to say about the future ahead of us is welcome to apply. There is no restriction on age, level of education, research background, discipline, cultural group, or identity. We value diverse perspectives from people with different lived experiences. We encourage young people working collaboratively to apply.

What you get: Projects selected via our open call will be funded with up to MXN 200,000 (Mexican pesos). This budget includes all licensing and artist’s fees, freight, insurance, and other related costs. No funds will be allocated for production expenses, including materials, tools or professional services. We ask that you include in your proposal a rough breakdown of the projected cost for licensing your project to Science Gallery Monterrey for six months. Science Gallery Monterrey will not permanently acquire any of the proposals selected through the open call.

Envisaged as a digital print on fabric, the artwork will be 15m wide by 9m high with an Augmented Reality (AR) layer on the Northwest wall of Proposition Camden in Chalk Farm Road, facing the iconic, circular building of The Roundhouse. Actors Training Programme for Young, Early Career Actors in Merseyside

This is a 10-week professional development programme led by Keith Saha, Co-CEO and Artistic Director for 20 Stories High, along with several incredible freelance specialists from around the UK. Presented by 20 Stories High, supported by Liverpool Everyman and Playhouse with support from LAMDA and Unity. The programme will equip participants with the tools necessary to enter a rehearsal room with confidence in their craft - from demystifying jargon to practical skills building. The 10-week programme will culminate in a scratch night performance for an invited audience.

Eligibility: The Actor’s Training Programme is for artists interested in performing who meet the following criteria; aged 18-30 based in Merseyside, early career (by this we mean either that you have little to no professional acting experience, or that you have some professional acting experience but no formal training in theatre). Preference will be given to artists who have faced barriers when accessing training, people who have experienced mental and/or physical health challenges , and/or people with extra responsibilities at home (e.g. primary caregiver for a relative or responsible for the care of children). We’re looking for 14 artists who can commit to all 10 workshop dates.

Display Europe invites individual journalists and small media organisations to apply for a micro-grant. This micro-grants scheme, available until March 31, 2024, seeks to foster journalistic content creation on pressing topics. The initiative envisions a European media landscape firmly rooted in public values and inclusivity, striving to build a collective platform reflecting the diverse realities shared across the continent.

Eligibility: This call is open to small media organisations and individual journalists (older than 18 years and backed by a fiscal sponsor) from at least three European countries. The applicant and/or legal entity receiving the grant should be based in the European Union.

What you get: Successful projects can receive up to €2,000, and the initiative aims to fund 20-25 projects in total, covering both content production and operational expenses.

Immersive Assembly Vol. 4: Dreams & Echoes

Immersive Assembly Vol 4: ‘Dreams & Echoes’ is the fourth annual talent development programme from Mediale. It is a multi-disciplinary residency focusing on learning, peer critique and developing new ideas and collaborations in and around immersive art and technology. The residency will take place between May – November 2024 and will support six UK-based artists/studios to collaborate and develop proposals for immersive experiences.

Eligibility: We are looking for 6 UK-based emerging and mid-career creative practitioners/studios (with 2-10 years of experience), with experience or desire to work with immersive art & tech.

What you get: The artist fee is £4,000, to support your time. Accommodation, travel and per diem expenses for in-person sessions will be covered by the programme outside of this fee. The residency will run in a hybrid format, beginning and ending with in-person activity, punctuated by a series of online talks, sessions, mentoring and workshops. The residency will culminate with an in-person showcase of three new immersive project prototypes, developed by the cohort who will collaborate in pairs, alongside a dedicated University of Oxford academic research partner. The showcase will be an opportunity to present the project to both public and sector audiences.

The Drawing Year is a full-scholarship postgraduate-level course run by the Royal Drawing School in Shoreditch, London. The course offers up to thirty students the opportunity to focus on drawing from observation for one year. There are no tuition fees and all students receive a free studio space.

Fernland Studios is an experimental ecological arts studio offering rest, rejuvenation, and reciprocity. We provide Black, Indigenous, and all people of colour artist residencies, ecological arts funding, and writing retreats at no cost to them and with additional funding to support their practice. Remote artist residencies run June 20 to August 1. Ecological Arts Funding is a small grant for cultural producers to propose programs. Our Writing Retreat is in-person from July 22-27 at Salishan Coastal Lodge.

Eligibility: Selection is based on the proposed work’s connection to Fernland Studios’ mission, vision, and values. Participants must be 18+, and all participants working and living across the United States/Turtle Island in 2024 are eligible, while prioritizing participants in the Pacific Northwest.

The Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum invites submissions to its annual juried Birds in Art exhibition.

Eligibility: Artists working in all mediums other than photography can submit up to two original artworks interpreting birds and related subject matter for jury consideration for Birds in Art 2024.

What you get:

  • The Museum pays for inbound and outbound shipping of artwork to and from the Museum.
  • The Museum handles all costs associated with wall-to-wall fine arts insurance.
  • Each exhibiting artist receives four complimentary Birds in Art 2024 catalogues.
  • The Museum generally acquires twelve to twenty artworks from Birds in Art each year.
  • The Museum coordinates the Birds in Art tour after the exhibition closes in Wausau. Artists are encouraged to make their artworks available for the tour; however, it is not mandatory. Notification of an artist’s inclusion in the tour occurs in mid-September.

Entries for the 2024 edition of the international Unpublished Photo contest promoted by the Fondazione culture e musei & MUSEC Lugano are now open. Young photographers have the chance until 15.4 to submit their portfolios of 10 unpublished photos. The aim of UP24 is to embrace & attract new, young & emerging contemporary photographers. Now in its fifth edition, the competition continues to attract a growing number of young, global artists. There is no theme or fees to pay and the four lucky winners will have their work displayed in a public exhibition at MUSEC between 31 October 2024 to 2 March 2025.

Eligibility: All photographers born between 1994 and 2006 can participate.

What you get: The UP24 competition will award the first runner-up a monetary prize of CHF 3’500; while the second to fourth place receive CHF 500 each. The four winners will be also awarded the publication of a catalogue published by the FCM containing all the photographs submitted to the competition, and an exhibition in Lugano, in the MUSEC venue. The costs of these valorisation activities amount to CHF 50’000 and are fully covered by the FCM.

England is a Forest: Exhibition Opportunity with Small Works Art Gallery

Submissions are now open for 2D artwork to be included in the upcoming exhibition ‘England is a Forest’ curated by Small Works Art Gallery (SWAG) at Sluice [Vernacular] Colchester, 2024. For this event, SWAG will be creating an illustrated forest of small paintings or drawings of trees from around England (and the wider UK) submitted through a free open call. We endeavour to accept all submissions as a democratic contrarian to the status quo of the traditional exhibition model.

Eligibility: Open to artists based in England and the wider UK- so long as the tree represented is an actual tree that exists in England and can be labelled with its location via geolocation, postcode or what3words. Artists can be at any stage of their career.

What you get: All participating artists will have their work exhibited online on our virtual map and archive. Select artists will also exhibit their work in the physical exhibition at Sluice [Vernacular] Colchester 2024 as well as the publication. The Saudi Ministry of Culture has announced a global open call for applications for its ‘Emerging New Media Artists’ Programme, set to take place at the soon-to-open Diriyah Art Futures (DAF) centre. Designed in collaboration with Le Fresnoy - Studio National des Arts Contemporains in France, Diriyah Art Future’s Emerging New Media Artists Programme is a one-year long programme supporting creative production training.

Eligibility: Applicants should be 35 years or younger, at graduate or postgraduate completion stage and have experience in developing and creating digital and new media arts. Interested candidates may find information, selection criteria and apply to the programme via the website.

Culture Moves Europe: Individual Mobility Action 2

Culture Moves Europe’s second call for individual mobility targets artists and cultural professionals working in the following sectors: music, literature, architecture, cultural heritage, design and fashion design, visual arts, and performing arts. The Individual Mobility Action supports artists and cultural professionals to carry out a project with a partner of their choice in another Creative Europe country.

Eligibility: The call is open to individuals and groups of up to 5 people, who wish to implement projects lasting between 7 to 60 days for individuals and 7 to 21 days for the groups. The application will be evaluated based on the applicant(s) goal, mobility relevance, long-term positive impacts of the project, and sustainability aspects of the project.

What you get: The grant is composed of a travel allowance (up to €700 per person for a round-trip), a daily allowance (€75 per person per day), and individual top-ups. Film London and Arts Council England present FLAMIN Animations, a commissioning programme for four early-career black-identifying artists animators living in the UK. Part of FLAMIN (Film London Artists’ Moving Image Network), the programme aims to support artist animators as they take their first steps into a career working with the moving image, with development support and funding for a new 2-3 minute animation.

Eligibility: Applicants should be experimenting with animation and must be 18-30 years old. This opportunity is for black-identifying artists who have a UK address. No formal education in animation or art is necessary, but please note that current students are not eligible. FLAMIN is open to people working in partnerships.

What you get: The successful applicants will receive £3,000 to create a new animation, along with development support and advice from the FLAMIN Team. The Artadia Awards provide financial support, exposure and recognition to artists. The awards are unrestricted, allowing artists to use the funds in any way they choose. Each year, an open-call application is made available in each of the seven active partner cities; they are Los Angeles, Chicago, New York City, San Francisco Bay Area, Boston, Atlanta, and Houston. Supporting artists equitably is a critical part of the Artadia Award process: we consider the unique populations of each community and are proud to reflect our country’s diversity with an Awardee pool that is over 50 percent female and over 40 percent persons of color.

Eligibility: Applicants must be a contemporary visual artist, making artwork for presentation in a contemporary art context: museum, galleries, arts non-profit, the public art realm, etc. Artadia does not fund filmmakers making films for distribution in cinematic venues, or those working in choreography presented outside of a contemporary art context. Applicants must be currently living and working within the city’s eligible counties and residing there for at least two years prior to the application deadline. Full details in application link.
