About

The Museum Haus Konstruktiv and the Zurich Insurance Group Ltd are very pleased  to acknowledge the eleventh winner of the internationally renowned Zurich Art Prize : The Art Prize will be awarded in 2018 to the artist Robin Rhode (born 1976 in Cape Town, lives in Berlin). The prize money of CHF 100,000 consists of a budget of CHF 80,000 for the production of a solo exhibition at the Museum Haus Konstruktiv and a prize sum of CHF 20,000.
Characteristic of Rhodes Oeuvre is the combination of street art, painting, performance, film and photography. The jury of the Zurich Art Prize was especially enthusiastic about Rhodes' clever and enjoyable use of constructive bonds.

Robin Rhode, born in 1976 in Cape Town, is well-established in the international art scene. He started his art career in 2003 with his participation in the exhibition How Latitudes become Formsat the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis. Since then, his oeuvre has distinguished himself through the virtuoso combination of street art, painting, performance, film, photography and, more recently, sculptures, whereby the medium of drawing often forms the basis. Rhode has been living in Berlin for more than fifteen years, where he develops his art in a disused industrial building. The history and current situation in his home country of South Africa still play an important role. Again and again he travels to Johannesburg to immerse himself in the "South African way of life". The local streets and neighborhoods offer him optimal conditions to implement the ideas for his photographic work.

In his exhibition a plan of the soul , Robin Rhode presents various works that he has conceived or adapted specifically for the Haus Konstruktiv. In a performance that Rhode made on the occasion of his exhibition opening, he drew with various parts of a car fixed to a rope. What remains behind after this spectacular act are the virtuoso drawings on the wall as well as the drawing instruments hanging from the ceiling.
