About

Combining different elements from organic and man-made to living, Zu Kalinowska is presenting a series of sculptures in her new solo exhibition 'Doom Bags'. Referring to those forgotten or neglected collections of random items with seemingly no other place to go, 'Doom Bags' highlights the connection, but also that neglect and discomfort stemming from and lying between these intertwined misunderstandings.

Speaking of possessions or relations, what we disregard eventually decays, taking on new forms in our absence. Tineola bisselliella, the misunderstood common clothes moth, is a participant in the process of deterioration, appearing in an incoherent flutter and signalling that it is already too late. Considered the most damaging pest in museums throughout the world, its capability of destroying huge amounts of hair and natural fibres is terrifying.

The exhibition reflects on the fight against decay, bringing people together in understanding our own demons and celebrating the demise of our disheveled state within late capitalism. The works are fabricated within the Nutri-Score sliding scale of assigned value, where the mixed glass, steel, gold synthetic and natural fibres will eventually rust.

-----

Zu Kalinowska is a sculptor and installation artist based in Europe. Her work explores futuristic ideas of human intimacy beyond the corporeal. Zu toes the line between disgust and beauty, exploring societal generalisations of the dichotomy between Real and Fake. Her works examine the remnants and debris of humans and their pointless creations that can stem from the trauma of late-stage capitalism. She seeks to find ways to perpetuate intimacy, encourage disgust, and thereby attempts to counteract life in this era of time-space compression.
