The Zeitgeist Exhibition: Up and coming artists and their rumination on the
changing world.
About
Zeitgeist is a showcase of graduate artists from Sheffield Hallam exploring ideas around the human condition, relationships, class, identity, and craft in the post-pandemic, ever-changing world. The exhibition is an insight into artistic expression in the modern world, tackling issues around digital technology and AI, consumerism, class, and identity, the affect this has on the creative process of the, and the impact on traditional craft practices.
Head Curator Katia Greenwood discloses that ‘although Sheffield is famous for being a city of makers, a place of industry and design, and a haven for new creatives, the pandemic has forced makers to exhibit primarily in an online space, which is devoid from so many of the emotional connections in-person art works create. The Zeitgeist exhibition is an unmissable opportunity to experience these new creatives marking their mark on the physical realm after over a year in front of laptop screens and WordPress exhibitions’.
Artists showing include Sculptor Steve Wood, featured in the Sunny Bank Mills Artist Showcase earlier this year, who delves into his own psyche for pieces such as ‘Chariots of Oxidised Memories’ which utilises a variety of materials including steel, foam, acrylic paint and historic agricultural implements alongside digital technologies to create dream-like sculptures playing with the ideas of memory and inhabiting space, and Natassja Drobinski of Sheffield’s own ‘The Seamonsters’ who’s work utilizes a repurposed storytelling narrative in ‘A Pretty Shit Dinner Party’, with imagery reminiscent of the surrealist movement, commenting on social and economic inequality, who showcased in WOMP spaces ‘Blue Scampi’ exhibition in August 2021.
Zeitgeist is open from the 5th of November to the 26th of November at the Sheffield Hallam University, Old Head Post Office building and is free to enter, however you will be required to follow the University’s Covid Regulations.
