Europeans Take Me With You Please
November 5th through December 10th
Vernissage: Thursday, November 5th, 7-10pm
Golden Parachutes is pleased to present Europeans Take Me With You Please, the first European solo exhibition of American artist and poet Zach Houston.
The Bay Area based artist will present over one hundred diagrammatic, stream of consciousness drawings. Zach Houston's freely associative works on paper explore linguistic and conceptual texture and syntax. His drawings take the form of visual conversations or densely networked catalogs of thought that ricochet between linguistics, psychology, pataphysics, John Cage, situationists, Buckminster Fuller, ancient civilizations, and contemporary conspiracy theory. These "drawings with words" converge with the artist's ongoing Poem Store, a "performance/business/literature project" in which the artist sells spontaneous free verse poetry composed on a manual typewriter in public spaces.
Zach Houston was born in 1982 in California. He currently lives and works in Oakland, CA. Solo exhibitions of his work have been presented at Johansson Projects and 826 Valencia. Every Poem I Haven't Sold, 2005-2009, was the fourth presentation in White Columns' ongoing and occasional 'Poetry Project' series which seeks to consider the persistent entanglements between the visual art and poetry worlds. Zach's work has been included in group exhibitions internationally and museum surveys of contemporary art made in Oakland, including Oakland: An East Side Story at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts and Habitat: We Live Here, a special project for the Oakland International Airport presented by the Oakland Museum of Art. Europeans Take Me With You Please will be the artist's first solo exhibition in Europe.
