In our everyday lives we depend heavily on our sense of sight to recognise forms, identify colours, and to see the contrast between light & dark. But what is this visible world really? Physics seems to suggest the world is formed by invisible energies, atoms, electrons, all of which exist in a state of flux. The Universe is created by the aggregation of these energies and forms. It is as if they were pixels on a computer screen: magnifying the screen allows us to see the pixels, yet we can't really distinguish these constituent parts in their normal state. The pixels are being generated by code inside the computer and the images displayed on the screen are a kind of reflection of this information. So what of the world we inhabit? The shapes we can see are only the shapes in the three dimensions, and the concept of shape is quite ambiguous when it is perceived from the scale of the universe. This evokes a certain ambiguity of real existence. What am I? What is this? Where is here? Our past and memories would appear to be fairly uncertain. At most we can only really be certain of the now, some kind of information that we receive at our sense organs and uncertain memories based on our incomplete storage of previous information that we have translated as experience. The visible world that we view through our eyes is just a limited sphere of the three dimensional space & while we may seem to be free, we are only looking at and experiencing a very limited world. I believe there is something which is not here, or not readily apparent, in this limited world view. Perhaps I want to believe we are not alone. I believe that on the other side of this world, which seems to spread in front of us like some kind of ever changing hologram, there is another unknown world filled with myriad possibilities. I attempt to reflect this mysterious world that I sense, this world of absolute freedom, this unknown, invisible world. I want to translate it, to be the interface between 'here' and 'there'. My attempt here is to produce artworks with as little pre-conceived notion or thought as is possible, because the world I am attempting to reflect cannot be obtained from the visible world nor from it's logic. When I create this work I do so without the use of my eyes except for during the stage of colouring, to avoid any visual information from interfering with the imagery I am attempting to translate. I concentrate mostly on sound which helps me clear my mind and challenge myself to eliminate my conscious thoughts as much as possible. This is in order to prioritise my uncertain feelings and emotions which arise from the depths of my subconscious and my 6th sense, and to interpret the information I detect from some other dimensional space.
