The Mosaic Rooms is pleased to present a season of films showcasing contemporary Kurdish cinema. We will launch in October with the acclaimed Yol by the great Kurdish director Yà„±lmaz Güney. The film is a portrait of Turkey in the aftermath of the 1980 Turkish coup d'état: its people and its authorities are shown via the stories of five prisoners given a week's home leave. Sadly, each of the men is confronted with tragedy, disillusionment or both upon arriving home. Writer Yilmaz Güney spent much of his adult life in prison for various political activities. Yol reflects on the oppressive sociopolitical attitudes of Turkey at the time, notably the subjugation of women and the oppression endured by its Kurdish population. Forced to direct the film by proxy while still imprisoned (official director Serif Goren followed his instructions), Güney completed editing the picture in exile in Switzerland, when he had escaped from his oppressors. Three years after production began, Yol was honored with the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival.
