Frank Fluegel Galerie with locations in Nuremberg and Kitzbühel is pleased to present the new book by XOOOOX.

About

The long awaited new book by street artist XOOOOX is finally out. The 160-page publication includes numerous works from 2012 to 2022 and is the second book about the internationally insanely successful street art artist XOOOOX.

The title of the book is therefore also "XOOOOX - WORKS 2012-2022" and is published under the ISBN 978-3-00-072517-3.

XOOOOX is currently the most successful German street artist. His works have been traded on the international art market for quite some time. For the first time in Austria, his works will be shown in Kitzbühel.

XOOOOX (pronounced "zooks"), born in 1979, started with classic graffiti at the age of 15 and is a Berlin-based street artist known for his guerrilla style, working with delicate stencil works and arte povera-style installations made of weathered and rotting materials.

XOOOX usually works on old facades. The vintage look and positioning are important to him. Occasionally, however, there are also works on "movable goods" such as steel doors or electricity boxes. Street art lives from what surrounds it and from the situation in which it is created. Rough facades, rusty gates, windy corners, time pressure, most difficult conditions for the creation. For this reason, many of the XOOOOX artworks offered in galleries are created on authentic wood and steel beams. He also works on large copper plates, which in the light develop a special aesthetic that changes over time.

French street artist Blek le Rat introduced XOOOOX to the stencil technique. He was a pioneer of the stencil who also traveled in Berlin.

In fact, XOOOOX is considered the first German street artist to become known on the international art market alongside Banksy. Although the artist's works can be seen throughout the city, his identity remains a secret to guard against accusations of public vandalism.

FRANK FLUEGEL GALERIE has exhibited XOOOX several times in Nuremberg and Kitzbühel, most recently under the title "Yellow Snow".

The New York Times recommended XOOOOX as one of the "12 Treasures of Europe" on October 17, 2014. The Urban Nation Museum in Berlin acquired a work for its permanent collection in February 2018. In Amsterdam, the world's largest street art museum opened in 2020 at Lasloods Hall. The museum was founded by Peter Ernst Coolen on the site of the NDSM Docks. XOOOX originals can also be seen there as part of the collection.

At the age of 16, XOOOOX began flipping through his sister's countless vogues, cutting out the models and pasting them onto surfaces around town. Later, he switched to stencils. He tries to contrast with the glamour of the fashion world by pasting the stylish and immaculate models on weathered and urban surfaces. In many of his works he also uses logos of fashion brands like Hermes or Chanel, which he alienates. In some cases, this can also be understood as homage, as is the case with brands that look back on a long tradition. In other cases, however, it is more a critique of the over-industrialization of fashion, and they invite the viewer to question it.

At the Cologne auction house Van Ham, a unique piece by XOOOOX set a new auction record on October 7, 2020. The work Laguna Bay (stencil on metal) reached €8,925 or US $10,000.

His life-size stencil works feature perfectly styled female models, such as Valeria, which he models after fashion campaigns. For the background, however, he relies on materials with history, such as decayed or weathered woods and fabrics. Thus, he creates a contrast with the glamor of the fashion world. In many of his works he also uses logos of fashion brands such as Hermes and Chanel, which he alienates. In some cases, this can be understood as homage, such as with brands that look back on a long tradition. In others, it is rather a criticism of the over-industrialization of fashion and invites the viewer to question it.
