WunderKammer

About

'Wunderkammer' - a 'wonder room', 'cabinet of wonders', 'a cabinet of curiosities'. The Wunderkammer appeared as a room that housed objects of fascination and curiosity that were yet to be categorised. Originating in the Renaissance period the room housed archaeological, geological or religious objects and relics (sometimes faked) that were found by explorers and travellers. There they waited to be labelled or characterised, placed into collections or encyclopaedic assemblies. Hoxton Art Gallery have commissioned Guler Ates, Mathew Tom, Nadine Mahoney, Richard Stone and Tom Cookson, each of whom explore the notions of the exotic, the authentic and the curios in their practice, to make a series of works reflecting the wonders of the Wunderkammer. The gallery itself will be turned into a ‘cabinet of curiosities' for the duration of the show featuring works in miniature, as well as paintings and art works that question the process of authentication.
