Works on paper brings together a wide range of original works including watercolours, drawings, prints and posters. From images drawn by hand, ink and pencil to crayon, pastel, gouache or charcoal, this exhibition will focus on artists who make works on paper an integral part of their practice, rather than preparatory works. Devoting themselves completely to the materiality of paper as well as its intimacy, these artworks draw the audience in. Each artist has a unique theme and method but they are united in their commitment to exploring the creative possibilities offered by paper.

Christy Powers explores through her striking works, the idea of how we construct our memories and how that is changing with social media. Her works offer a view on the contemporary need to create an online identity and represent and capture the ephemeral and impermanent. We are also invited to see a rather fantasized world through the works of Pascal Fessler. In a movie like setting, he explores contrasts between flatness and spatiality as well opacity and transparency. The artist’s work expresses several themes, from his childhood experiences in America to feelings of solitude and opinions about religious institutions or bigotry. Chamy avoids recognizable pictorial associations or symbolic explanations in order to give the viewer a whole new experience through abstraction. Concentrating on effects of light and colour she creates works that appear at once straightforward but are composed with indefinable shapes and marks. She evokes figural illusions that remain elusive at times.

These artists create works that are distinctively individual and that reflect an intuitive engagement with their creative process. They invite us to understand and be part of it through their works.

We welcome you to join us at the opening of WORKS ON PAPER on Wednesday 4th March 6pm – 8:30pm at The Brick Lane Gallery.
