Woodlands and Wetlands by Laura Howarth

Having grown up on the Pacific Northwest coast of the USA, Laura has always had an instinctive connection with the forests and coastlines of that region. ‘I’ve always loved the stillness, the calm, the enclosed darkness and the slightly haunting quality of forested areas’. Since moving to Britain in her early twenties she has come to love the forests and the broadleaved trees of the British countryside.

‘I have also been drawn to the edges of land that merge into water – the marshes and bogs, the dunes and coastal areas of Britain’. She enjoys exploring a different kind of stillness and calm in these sometimes remote margins between land and sea.

Trying to tease out the essence of the woodlands and the wetlands by finding appropriate materials and processes, Laura has produced terraskin drawings, paintings in oil and cold wax medium, and printmaking of various kinds as a way of exploring these subjects. This exhibition represents the culmination of two years’ work and future directions include experimentation with oil and cold wax medium on a larger scale, incorporating collage and drawn lines into the process.

Laura is an Artist Network Member of the RWA and shows her work in three galleries in the southwest. She also has work in private collections in the UK, Europe and the USA.
