Maia-Mari Sutnik, curator emerita of photography at the Art Gallery of Ontario, will speak at a Visual Arts Salon about women who dared to pursue photography as an art form.

About

On Tuesday October 22, 2019 at 7:30 PM, Maia-Mari Sutnik, curator emerita of photography at the Art Gallery of Ontario, will speak at a Visual Arts Salon about women who dared to pursue photography as an art form. Following the development of photography in 1839, pioneers such as Anna Atkins and Julia Margaret Cameron, modernists such as Berenice Abbott and Tina Modotti, and contemporary artists such as Diane Arbus and Cindy Sherman used photography to challenge traditional assumptions about the role of women in the arts. Maia-Mari Sutnik will examine the work of these women and explore how the power of photography continues to shape contemporary developments in the visual arts.
