theCoLAB is excited to announce that the inaugural Women Make Sculpture commission: Dissent Module (Escape from Semiramis) by Rachel Ara has landed at the Wilkins Terrace, UCL Gower Street Campus (Warren Street tube).

About

The sculpture, which takes the form of a space descent module, appears to have crash-landed at UCL.  Over the coming months, it will repair itself and reveal aspects of its sentient self.  At odds with the norms of public sculpture, the celebrations and the fanfare.

Women Make Sculpture aims to dispel the myth that women artists do not (or cannot) make engaging, ambitious and, if desired, large scale outdoor works. Women Make Sculpture is an award of £15,000 towards the making of work: be it new or stemming from an idea long under consideration. The brief was open as to material, narrative and theme but the work must demonstrate an interest in making and materials or be inspired by the context for the work.
