WIR BAUEN EINE NEUE STADT is a three-chapter series of exhibitions, workshops, performances, artist walks and food actions.

About

WIRWIR joins the Berlin project space scene in 2021 with this inaugural exhibition series. April Gertler & Adrian Schiesser, co-founders of WIRWIR, developed this exhibition/event series to consider how a community can be built, supported and understood. Although the 80s band Palais Schaumburg considers the physical components of building a new city in their song WIR BAUEN EINE NEUE STADT, WIRWIR uses their song title to examine metaphorical and lyrical ideas of creating a city through the three chapters of the series, titled BUILD, IDENTIFY and ACTIVATE.

BUILD: examines the physicality of a city. Exploring questions of materiality, landscape, in addition to ecological resources used; the exhibition, performance and artist walk will focus on these concepts from a wide perspective. Artists and an architect included in this chapter are; Van Bo Le Mentzel (DE), Shannon Bool (CA), Andrew J. Burford (ZA), Onur Ceritoğlu (TR), and James Chan (HK) & Miriam Neubauer (DE).

IDENTIFY: Berlin is home to over 190 nationalities and as a result Chapter Two considers the definition of a city through its inhabitants and their food.
A series of food events will explore not only how communities come together but how a community is defined by food and traditions in addition to mending what is broken. Artists included in this chapter are; Soydivision (ID), Wieder zuhause Flicken (DK) and April Gertler (US) & Idil Morsallioglu (TR)

ACTIVATE: How do communities interact and connect to one another? Chapter Three contemplates the activation of communities through interactive workshops on using found natural plant materials and waste materials, in addition to artist walks through various parts of Neukölln. Artists included in this chapter are; Lucila Kenny (AR), Maureen de Jong (NL), Adrian Schiesser (DE) and April Gertler (US)
