Winter Lights - 'Marbles' by Daan Roosegaarde

About

Canary Wharf's annual Winter Lights installation will be illuminating the dark winter days with ‘Marbles', a new interactive artwork by Dutch artist and designer Daan Roosegaarde, who has just won the prestigious Design for Asia Award. From Monday 9 January to Friday 2 March, Roosegaarde's ‘Marbles' can be found in Jubilee Park, interacting with passers-by, making sounds and changing colour as you approach. As dusk falls, the park will come alive with these eight spectacular glowing forms, which appear to communicate with one another as well as with the people in their vicinity! Documenting the dynamic relationship between architecture, people and technology, ‘Marbles´ reflects on the demise of traditional childhood games, such as marbles, and the current obsession with computers and technology, questioning how technology can be used in a more social manner. Following his recent visit to the design studio in Amsterdam, Canary Wharf's Keith Watson said: ‘Marbles is a stunning addition to the internationally-acclaimed projects created by Studio Roosegaarde - the team of innovative designers and artists through whom Daan devises his astonishing interactive landscapes.' Enlivening Jubilee Park from Monday 9 January, ‘Marbles´ will complement the world-class London Ice Sculpting Festival taking place at Canary Wharf on Friday 13 and Saturday 14 January 2012.
