About

Adam Gallery is delighted to present an exhibition of recent work by William Selby.

William is a versatile artist. He began his training as a figure painter, but is now more widely known for his landscapes, with particular emphasis on harbour scnes, and still lifes.

Originally from Yorkshire, William is now based in Devon. The rich and colourful landscapes of both these areas seem to have informed his paintings as each one is characterised by the use of bold colours and simplified forms.

In his landscapes, bright oil paints are applied thickly to the surface, heightening the sense of depth and texture. The still lifes are defined by more abstracted shapes and flattened perspectives. These are balanced with recognisable objects, such as a vase of flowers, creating an interesting and lively composition. Whilst the colour and composition of these paintings is very striking in all his works, each painting also maintains a sense of harmony.

William' s work has been exhibited widely in the UK including: Royal Academy, Royal Watercolour Society, The New English Art Club, Royal Glasgow Institute, Royal Scottish Academy, Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolours.

He has won numerous awards over the years and his memberships include: R.O.I., R.B.A.,R.W.S., and N.E.A.C.
