The Thames and the life teeming on its banks was a continual source of inspiration to James McNeill Whistler. Join Rachel Sloan, assistant curator of works on paper at The Courtauld Gallery, for an exploration of selected etchings from Whistler’s celebrated Thames Set.
The Thames and the life teeming on its banks was a continual source of inspiration to James McNeill Whistler, whether for keenly observed scenes of modern life or diffuse dreamscapes. Join Rachel Sloan, assistant curator of works on paper at The Courtauld Gallery, for an exploration of selected etchings from Whistler’s celebrated Thames Set (1859-1871) and lithographs of Thames subjects made later in his career. She will discuss the central role the two different printmaking processes played in shaping Whistler’s approach to the Thames landscape.
