About
Where We All Meet is a multimedia project by artist Kristina Pulejkova. Through water screen projections, virtual reality and dance, the artist tells the fascinating story of the life and migration of the Ohrid eel, part of the European eel species.
All European eels are born in the same place, the depths of the Sargasso sea, part of the Atlantic ocean. Carried by the Gulf Stream, they travel for almost two years in order to get to our rivers and lakes, where they spend most of their lives until they reach maturity. Ready to take their way back, the eels embark on a ‘wedding journey’ to the Sargasso sea where they reproduce.
However, the route of our eels is blocked by 6 dams, standing in the eels’ way to the Adriatic sea, the route that leads to its final destination. This is a story about two eels - Bisera and Alice, the former from the Ohrid lake, and the latter from the river Thames in London. They magically manage to start a telepathic conversation, sharing their life experiences, adventures and fantasies about the journey back.
Through the use of immersive technology and holographic projections onto the lake itself, the work aims to raise awareness of the broken migration route of this critically endangered animal, whose population has been in rapid decline due to pollution, climate change and human-made barriers.
