About

‘Where is the line?’ brings together a number of works from Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art (mima) which holds one of the most important collections of drawings in the North-East.

mima’s relationship to drawing started with The Cleveland International Drawing Biennial, which ran from 1973 to 1996, and was an international open exhibition, aiming to attract the very best of contemporary drawing to the Tees Valley. Subsequent projects with the Contemporary Art Society and Art Fund have developed collecting around British drawing and post war American drawing.

The exhibition at the Granary Gallery brings together works from mima’s collection, focusing on artists who use drawing and mark making as a tool to document and interpret their immediate environment – both urban and rural, real or imaginary or somewhere in-between. The exhibition includes works by Norman Cornish, William Tillyer, George Shaw, L.S Lowry and David Hepher amongst others.
