Bartha Contemporary is delighted to announce What’s Yours Is Mine (#WYIM), Jill Baroff and Stefana McClure’s first joint exhibition at the gallery, from September 16 – November 18, 2017. Please join us for the afternoon private view on Saturday September 16, from 2 to 4 PM.

About

The artists and the gallery have collaborated for over a decade and this exhibition celebrates both this continuous relationship and the artists’ recent marriage. Indeed, the show’s title references both an auspicious moment and the notion of joint authorship. This joint authorship extends into the artists’ practice, collaborating on a suite of new paintings entitled Square Peg Round Hole. An act of resistance and conformity, the artists pounded square wooden pegs into round holes too small to accommodate them. This direct act made with simple, humble, materials, is transformed into subtle works of exquisite beauty that belie the blunt force that created them.

The exhibition features new installations and works on paper by both artists, including a number of recent Protest Stones and Films on Paper by Stefana McClure as well as new Hudson River and constructed drawings by Jill Baroff. At its core, the exhibition draws on the people and places that play a crucial role in their everyday lives. Stefana McClure’s Films on Paper depict a selection of their friends favourite movies while Jill Baroff’s Hudson River drawings take their inspiration from the defining feature of the landscape they live in.

What’s Yours Is Mine coincides with Stefana McClure’s installation Sleeper at Sleeper Art-Space in Edinburgh, September 15 – October 27, an installation showcasing eight Films on Paper in various languages, each embodying Woody Allen’s wonderfully surreal science fiction spoof of the same name.
