This panel looks in particular at the much mythologised Nordic model: what impact has it had on art practice? What is the current state of the welfare state and what does the future hold?
About
After the infamous 90s Young British Artists (YBA) there came the ‘Nordic Miracle’. Like the label YBA, it became a tool to promote the art of Northern Europe, generously supported by a Nordic welfare state system that places art and culture at the heart of society. But in the face of accelerating globalisation are these crumbling welfare states genuinely supporting artistic freedom, or only reproducing nostalgia for a failed Nordic model? Given the marginalisation of the arts in Britain and the rest of Europe, can we imagine some kind of Euro-lateral ‘regional solidarity’ that benefits the art world and society as a whole? And if so, can we even talk about Nordic art anymore?
Series chair Jonas Ekeberg will be joined by artist Petra Bauer, artist Bjørnstjerne Christiansen from Superflex and artist and Member of the Icelandic Parliament Birgitta Jonsdottir.
