About

Ben Medd-Phillips
‘Wet the Bow’
The Lido Stores
11-25 November 2023
Private view: 7-9pm Saturday, 11 November 2023

The exhibition title ‘Wet the Bow’ refers to the nautical tradition of smashing a bottle of alcohol over the bow of a vessel on its launch for good luck – a nod to Medd-Phillips’ first solo exhibition in Margate, his favourite Kentish seaside town.

“It’s the varying modes of process which I am interested in,” he says, “the unforeseeable outcomes which are most fascinating to me. New methods and experimentations are used in different series, mistakes and ‘happy accidents’ are always welcomed. It’s imperative for me not to be loyal to one creative tribe.”

A native of New York City, USA, Medd-Phillips studied Fine Art in the USA and UK and now lives and works in south London. His practice is rooted in painting and drawing, sometimes printmaking, and lends itself towards abstraction with figurative or organic elements within his work. He embraces the unknown in his studio, using multiple liquid mediums with a variety of tools on different surfaces. Medd-Phillips has exhibited widely in London and New York.

Ben Medd-Phillips’ solo exhibition ‘Wet the Bow’ runs at The Lido Stores in Margate from Saturday, 11 November to Sunday, 26 November. A private view drinks reception will be held at the gallery from 7 to 9pm on Saturday, 11 November.
