About

Histories in the Age of Confusion is a new series of paintings by Wendy Elia four times finalist of BP awards. Finalist & Public vote winner of the Sovereign European Art Prize & Cultural Olympian. It explores issues of genetics, ethnicity, sexual politics, colonialism, and what it means to be British at this juncture in the 21st Century. At the show's core are several life-size portraits of women tied to the artist through friendship or familial connections. Each poses the question of how and why they came to be here. These portraits are interspersed with smaller works relating to the broader narratives of history and art history. As we unravel the women's heritage, other histories emerge: stories of migration and of generations re-inventing themselves. The exhibition will also include a film made by artist Laura Bushel in which the six female models talk about their experience of posing and the biographical context that went into the making of Made in Britain, creating a companion piece to the painting that reveals some of the collaboration between artist and model
