In the solo exhibition WELT UND NEBEL, the GALERIE ALBER shows current works by the Belgian artist Michel Mouffe.
About
Like hardly any other contemporary artist, the Belgian painter Michel Mouffe (b. 1957) transcends the boundaries of Minimalism. Mouffe’s canvases immediately emancipate themselves from monochrome austerity into a shimmering presence. Due to his unique working method, applying countless layers of paint, the colour effect of his works changes depending on the viewer’s perspective. Elements inserted on the reverse stretch the canvas partially outwards, creating an art that is neither panel painting nor object. It asks: What is surface, what is space, what is illusion? Whereas Pierre Bonnard painted light, Mouffe captures its effect. As in his exhibition at the Musées Royaux des Beaux-Arts in Brussels in 2018, Mouffe is also presenting large-format works in this, his first gallery exhibition in Germany since more than thirty years. In addition, new small-format paintings are also on view, which not only represent an unexpected step into the representational, but also lend Mouffe’s work a surprising political dimension with, among other things, an image of Walter Lübcke.
