About

We Were Everywhere combines archival material and objects from the British Empire and Commonwealth Collection, and new oral histories collected by curator Ananya Sharma.

The interviewees are Bristol residents sharing the stories of their family members, who were caught up in the wars and their aftermath on the Indian subcontinent. They all shed light on a long, complex history that continues to play out today, in South Asia and beyond.

Ananya is a social and cultural historian from India and a recent MPhil graduate from the University of Oxford, specialising in medieval and early-modern Indian visual materials and art history. She is currently working as a museum and gallery professional in Oxford and London.

We Were Everywhere is a partnership between members of Bristol’s South Asian community and the British Empire & Commonwealth Collection.
