Waxchick (by artist Vasilisa Forbes) will display her 8th Billboard in Bethnal Green to continue the discussion of contemporary advertisement, display of women in commercial media and the power of 'forced advertising' in our current culture.
About
"Our image heavy culture and its obsession with visual activity, production of idols and information sharing is reaching ever new and soaring heights. Image Reproduction, reading of images and communication through image media overrule our modern business and consumer level culture. "
"In the streets, in the home, in the sky we are involved with photographic-based media - in short it fills a ridiculously considerable amount of our waking lives"
Waxchick - a character devised by visual artist Vasilisa Forbes continues to take risks in her display of a stylised, iconograpic public performance persona who recreates advertisments, takes over billboards and stages strange events and situations to discuss the cult of the icon, the brand and the image in our modern culture.
This February, in the run-up to the over-commercialised 'Valentines Day, Waxchick will take-over a billboard in Bethnal Green: East London, to mimic, parody and draw attention to our obsession with capitalist consumerism, advertisment and self gratification. A short series of events and performances will take place in the area.
