Washing the Nappies: Working in the Post-War Suburban Kitchen

We’re excited to announce a series of talks that have been programmed alongside Rachel Adams & Tessa Lynch’s collaborative exhibition “Stoop, Stoop, Stooping is Stoopid!” on display in the Studio Pavilion at House for an Art Lover. This series delivered by a variety of academics, writers, artists and historians aims to expand upon some of the artists’ research interests as well as provide an insight into a variety of subjects touched upon by the exhibition.

The interwar suburban home offered new ways of living for tenement dwelling Scots. As well as rooms designed solely for sleeping, the new labour-saving kitchenette was a modern workspace based on ideas of gender, science, design and class. After the Second World War, as women’s roles changed alongside the increasing domestic consumption, the kitchenette became a site of modernisation and frustration as it began to creak at the seams to accommodate the trappings of modern housework. This illustrated talk will explore the history of the kitchen and the experiences of working in the home in post-war suburban Glasgow.

Dr Yvonne McFadden is a social and cultural historian whose research focuses on housing design and how people use space to meet their needs as individuals but also as a couple, family or household. She is particularly interested in how women’s work, paid and unpaid, impacts upon social mobility and affluence in the second half of the twentieth century.

Access:
Both the Studio Pavilion gallery & House for an Art Lover are fully accessible venues. All entrances to the gallery and house have ramped access and there is a lift to allow access to the other levels of the House. All paths around the house and gallery are tarmac which are flat and accessible. There is an audio induction loop in place for use by people with hearing aids. Assistance dogs are welcome. Please contact us if you have any questions or concerns regarding access. We have four blue badge parking spaces available on site.
