About

The extremity of the battlefield has accelerated scientific developments resulting in some of medicine's greatest triumphs such as the pioneering plastic surgery techniques developed on injured WWII RAF pilots. But the darker side of human nature has found ‘opportunities' in war for immoral medical experiments and even genocide. Beginning with the disasters of the Crimean War and continuing through to today's conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq, we highlight the personal experiences of surgeons, soldiers, civilians and nurses and ask what lessons modern society can learn from the extreme circumstances of warfare.
