Wanting to get free
How much freedom do we really have as artists when our galleries gets attacked for showing photos of naked men or caricatures of vegan culture, and artists get attacked online for making political work?
The question becomes "how free are we to do what we want as artists?" Do we have freedom to say what's on our minds, to engage the brains of others, to enter into discourse?
By using images that challenge people we are opening a discussion. If we start concerning ourselves with the opinions of others we become their prisoner and we might as well quit being artists and get jobs as interior decorators or fashion designers.
More and more we feel freedom is a mind-set. We are limited in our ability to be free of societies rules, or free of the capitalist system, or free from the physics of the universe, or from what our genes want us to do, but so long as we choose how we spend our time, and more importantly how we choose to feel about the things that happen, WE ARE FREE. Freedom from our own limiting opinions is the true freedom. Freedom is a choice we make in every second, and that power lies with us.
