The renowned Garden of Cosmic Speculation, designed by landscape architect Charles Jencks and Maggie Keswick Jencks, will be revealed in a new light, in a series of personal photographs by their filmmaker and photographer son, John Jencks.

About

One of the world’s most extraordinary private gardens will go on show in a new exhibition of photographs by John Jencks. The renowned Garden of Cosmic Speculation, designed by landscape architect Charles Jencks and Chinese garden designer Maggie Keswick Jencks, will be revealed in a new light, in a series of personal photographs by their filmmaker and photographer son, John Jencks.

The Garden of Cosmic Speculation, located in the Scottish borders, explores fundamental scientific concepts through captivating sculptural installations, as well as showcasing Charles Jencks’s signature swirling landforms. It was described by Daniel Liebskind as "an adventurous and personal journey through time and space".

Opening on 16 January 2018 at Sladmore Contemporary in Mayfair, Walking in the Universe will show previously unseen photographs which share a personal perspective on this iconic landscape, as photographer John Jencks brings together glimpses of the gardens throughout the year.

John Jencks’s images bring a filmmaker’s eye to the subject, revealing unusual new views and interpretations. John comments, “In the design of The Garden of Cosmic Speculation, the Chinese concept of miniaturising a landscape has been writ large; taking the laws of the universe and expressing them in landform, aluminium and water. These photographs take the viewer on a walk through the garden and explore the points where nature and design meet.”

The garden opens to the public annually through the Scotland's Gardens Scheme to raise funds for Maggie’s Centres a cancer care charity conceived of and named in honour of Maggie Keswick Jencks. The Garden of Cosmic Speculation and the gardens of Maggie’s Centres embody a belief in the welcoming and healing power of gardens, and the importance of the relationship between people, nature and science.

Shot on a variety of formats, from small sensor digital to medium format film, the photographs will be sold to benefit charity Just For Kids Law.
