Images of the street scene
About
The Riverside Café Gallery is delighted to host Visions of the Street, a joint exhibition by artist Jacky Paynter and photographer Rob Lowthian. After discovering by chance that they both have an interest in older buildings and their place in the street scene, Jacky and Rob have brought their work together to celebrate the beauty in this architecture. Doors, windows, archways and walls offer a visual feast of patina, texture, colour and design, conveying far more than just bricks and mortar.
As a photographer, Rob’s focus had shifted away from the high gloss and starkly representational towards the abstract. Jacky, at the same time, was moving towards a more organic approach to her painting in which texture, colour and shape became a vehicle for interpretation, rather than representation. When the two artists put their work together, they discovered some surprising similarities. Although in different media, they felt it just ‘worked together’ in a combination that adds richness and depth to the viewing experience.
