Virginia’s family have lived and worked for generations in the landscape of Nidderdale, North Yorkshire and it is this landscape that is the focus of her work.
About
In this ‘Area of Outstanding Beauty’, Virginia sees not only rolling hills and vegetation but also a layering of time. To her, this landscape has memory and it is the fluidity and cycle of life on the land that is her interest. In particular, she is interested in the lead mines, the quarries and the building of the reservoirs in the Dale. Incorporating cement and old photographs in her work, Virginia seeks to highlight the cultural and human histories of this landscape.
As Tacita Dean states, ‘Land is space in which the process of remembrance continues to activate the past.’
Virginia Ray has an MA in Fine Art from the University for the Creative Arts, Farnham.
