About

Figures (?)
Vincenzo Schillaci
With a text by Francesca Boenzi

Organised by Untitled Association, Operativa and Lychën, Figures (?) is the first show by Vincenzo Schillaci in Berlin. On occasion, a series of unreleased works will be presented, telling of the artist’s poetics and his recent research on figuration.

“Vincenzo Schillaci focuses his research upon the questioning of current codes of representation, of body and identity losing unity and centrality in their physical and real characteristics. Being the persistent writing of this exploration, the works on board contain attempts rather than answers, being repeated, stratified and forming a dense matter holding historical awareness and present sensibility.

On his works on board, the artist uses an ancient technique, already widespread in Roman times - as it was coded during the Renaissance, Vasari talks largely about it in the Vite - to marble different types of surfaces by reproducing marble whiteness and veins, and which will be fundamental in the development of fresco painting. Vincenzo alternates colour-filled backgrounds and abstract signs to strata of mixture smoothed through lime, marble powder and sometimes earthenware. From time to time, stucco serves to screen without hiding, so that the signs and the chromatic qualities of the earlier strata remain as an emerging trace through the last draft, which is made of a lighter mixture protecting the underneath strata as under a sort of cold, smooth veil.

Although the painting presents itself almost as a monochrome, it allows hints of figures, static or moving, within each strata; multiple possibilities of representation that have been hinted and topped each time. There is no erasing, but a potentially endless stratification of what the work could have been at any given moment of its history.

[…] Vincenzo’s paintings are place of possibility and “of doubt”, as invested as they are by the tension of repeatedly restoring the impartiality of the acting surface. A painting is not an absolute space to inhabit; it is rather a tormented, crossing point. A surface first inhabited, then denied, rejected and finally created anew, in an alternation of unresolved attempts.”

With the exhibition Figures (?), Untitled Association successfully continues its activity of support and promotion of emerging artists in Italy and abroad. After last year’s debut on the international scene - Wrecks and Rooms with Stars by Giovanni Ozzola - Untitled Association has again chosen Berlin’s Gallery Weekend to present the first project of the young artist from Palermo.
