Guest-curated by artist Harm van den Dorpel, the sixth edition of Video Club is presented in collaboration with Amsterdam-based organization The One Minutes foundation

About

Combining selections from the Stedelijk’s single channel video collection with new one-minute videos solicited via an open call, this edition of Video Club responds to themes found within artist Harm van den Dorpel’s work: the concept of artificial scarcity, the social and political implications of algorithmic modes of existence, and artificial intelligence-generated compositions. During the program, free pizza and beer are served. A conversation between Van den Dorpel and Julia van Mourik (director of The One Minutes) will conclude the evening. Open discussion with the audience is encouraged.

ABOUT THE CURATOR
Harm van den Dorpel is a Berlin-based artist and software developer. He programs complex information systems in which generations of artworks are “cross-bred”, and develop over time, using insights from fields such as genetics and linguistics. His practice reveals that the separations between the “actual” and “virtual” are often ideologically biased. He has exhibited at the New Museum in New York, The Ullens Center for Contemporary Art in Beijing, the Museum of Modern Art, Warsaw, the Netherlands Media Art Institute Amsterdam, and most recently, the Museum for Modern and Contemporary Art Seoul.

Alongside his own creative practice, van den Dorpel is also co-founder and curator of left gallery, an online platform that produces and sells downloadable objects.

ABOUT THE ONE MINUTES FOUNDATION
The One Minutes Foundation produces and distributes one-minute videos from an artistic point of view, offering an international stage for people to create, engage and connect. Core values are artistry, authenticity, democracy and diversity.

Every month, The One Minutes puts out a new series of one-minute films that investigate how we perceive and engage with moving image. Museums and cultural organizations around the world subscribe to the series. The One Minutes has exhibited amongst others at Museum De Pont in Tilburg, National Gallery of Iceland in Reykjavík, Power Station of Art in Shanghai and Whitney Museum of American Art in New York.

The Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision preserves The One Minutes Collection consisting of over 10,000 video works by artists from more than 120 countries.

VIDEO CLUB
Video Club is a screening series highlighting the Stedelijk’s collection of time-based media. Through thematically organized selections of moving image works, Video Club presents films and videos spanning diverse eras, regions, and artistic movements. The rotating screening series puts time-based media into dialogue with other works on view in Stedelijk BASE, and draws attention to prominent issues and motifs that recur throughout the museum’s collection.

Pizza, beer and refreshments will be served.
