About
Verloren und Gefunden showcases the conceptual artworks produced by Noel Hensey during his artist residency at SomoS. Taking inspiration from minutely-observed everyday encounters, the artist appropriates the tradition of the ready-made to question our approach to the real. As writer/curator Chris Fite-Wassilak observes: “Hensey finds in the super-mundane the seeds of its own mutations - the visible embodies a moment of insight, its presence becoming a range of possible meanings that then might return, in another form, as our own personal moments.”
With vivid references to both Conceptual and Minimalistic Art traditions, each of Hensey’s creations, as the artist states, comes from a “moment of pure perception,” in which his “habitual semantic/judgmental processes are slowed or stopped.” Duchampian re-contextualizations of common-use items – such as Noel’s perfumed Magic Tree or the Sneaker bars - inspire Hensey’s work.
Interchanging media and site-specific installations allow him to create a dynamic space for encounters, which visitors, freed from the semantic patterns that the forces of habit may impose on their minds, are invited to share.
