About
“Vanitas Fair” is a week-long exhibition format in the Anton Janizewski Gallery. The exhibition, curated by Olga Hohmann and Jan Koslowski, playfully deals with the format of the still life in modern and contemporary art.
The term “Vanitas” goes back to the (incomprehensible) idea of one’s own finitude, indistinguishably caught in the same term as “vanity”. In art history, vanitas still lifes are paintings that operate with the symbol of the skull - but, precisely because they deal with death, they also represent radical liveliness.
Works from the Third Floor Department of Villa Grisebach are complemented and counteracted by contemporary positions. The contemporary positions can be viewed during the exhibition period from December 8th. until December 16th. in the Anton Janizewski Gallery, Goethestrasse 69, the works can be purchased from the auction house at the online only auction from December 20th to January 7th, 2024.
