About

Visual artist, photographer, writer, Valérie Mréjen (b. 1969, lives and works in Paris) multiplies the means of expression to better explore the language’s possibilities. Her videos are often inspired by memories, everyday events, cruel and farcical details of existence, platitudes, misunderstanding... She mixes it with various types of reported or experienced stories that she rewrites and rearranges, before staging it.

For her new project in Vienne, Valérie Mréjen has worked from a 1920s postcards collection coming from the City’s Archive. From this correspondence between a father (Baptiste) and his son (Claudius, gone to Morocco for military duty) derives a strong filial relationship, which serves as a starting point for a new video in which singular stories are embodied in the narrator’s voice-over.

Through a subtle play of cropping and reframing the pictures of Vienne reproduced onto some of these postcards, Valérie Mréjen also brings to life short plots: displayed within La Halle des bouchers space, these narrative scenes create a link between image and storyline, at the same time sensitive, historical and senseless.

In partnership with Lettres sur cour festival and Lucioles Bookstore, Valérie Mréjen will propose a reading on Saturday, June 2, at 4 pm at Centre d’art contemporain La Halle des bouchers.

Valérie Mréjen is represented by Anne-Sarah Bénichou Gallery, Paris
