About

Galerie Eva Presenhuber is proud to announce a second Zurich gallery in the cultural heart of the city. Opening on January 25, 2020, the inaugural exhibition at Rämistrasse 33 will present new and significant sculptures and wall-based works by Swiss artist Valentin Carron.

In his sculptures and collages, Carron imitates traditional handicrafts, lesser-known artworks, stereotypical forms of modern art, and certain forms of the everyday. By appropriating these objects, he questions originality, authenticity, and identity in the globalized world. His reformulations of traditional handicraft, mainly from his Swiss home, show a characteristic touch of irony: Carron recreates these incarnations of a romantic, pastoral Switzerland with inexpensive industrial materials such as polystyrene. In his recent works, he uses the same sense of irony to refer to the contemporary environment of technology and the Internet.

Valentin Carron (born 1977 in Martigny, Switzerland) represented Switzerland at the Venice Biennale in 2013. In 2015, Carron was awarded the renowned Overbeck prize while exhibiting at the Overbeck Gesellschaft in Lübeck. Carron has been the subject of further solo exhibitions at institutions worldwide, including Musée des Beaux-Arts de Rennes and Galerie Art & Essai Université Rennes, 2018; Centre d’édition contemporaine, Geneva, 2016; Kunsthalle Bern, 2014; Palais de Tokyo, Paris, 2010; La Conservera Centro de Arte Contemporáneo, Ceuti/Murcia, 2009; and the Swiss Institute, New York, NY, 2006. He has also participated in numerous group exhibitions in museums, including Haus Konstruktiv, Zurich, 2019; Swiss Institute, New York, NY, 2018; Musée d’art Sion, Sion, 2017; Centre d’Art Contemporain, Geneva, 2013; Migros Museum für Gegenwartskunst, Zurich; Rubell Family Collection, Miami, 2012; Aargauer Kunsthaus, Aarau, 2012; Le Consortium, Dijon, 2012.
