Campbell Works is delighted to present a new film by Richard Ducker, which will be the artist’s first project with the gallery. ‘URGENT: SLEEP BETTER’ is a 40 minute sci-fi film of sorts, with no story, although it does have a narrative arc, evoking a sense of dislocation and loss. It is part filmed on an iPhone, part found footage from YouTube, forming a tone poem that uses existing cinematic tropes to establish a montage of emotional disconnect. Woven between these discrete elements is a textual narrative where unspecified surveillance permeates spliced extracts from the writings of ‘Heavens Gate’ cult, ‘clippings’ from the artist’s own spam box and Facebook feed. It offers a glimpse into the overload of a repressed economy, the collapse of privacy, and its corollary, the conspiracy theory’s paranoiac escapism, while the film presents as a series of dreamlike sequences.
