Urban Visions, is an exhibition of work from artist Louise Hayward RE SWE. They describe the landscape in which the artist grew up and that has formed an integral part of the societal makeup within London from the mid-twentieth century until the current day.
About
Louise's prints are held in the collection of the Ashmolean Museum, the Victoria and Albert Museum, the British Museum, the Collection of H.M The Queen and in many private collections
The subject-matter that recurs in Louise's recent work is the post-war building which helped to shape the characteristic texture of inner London, where she has always lived. She is interested in the individuality of these buildings in terms of their design, structure and sculptural quality. This architecture has been negatively associated with the welfare state and social breakdown while the buildings themselves often present a powerful, enigmatic presence in the city. They also have a strong connection to memories of growing up in London in the 1960s and 70s.
Method of Working
Relief prints are made by using wood engraving and lino tools on polymer and lino blocks. Even with careful planning, working on an image in reverse allows an element of the unexpected to take place between what has been engraved into the block and the resulting impression. This process continues to hold an enduring fascination and challenge.
