The exhibition will feature works of four contemporary artists from Uruguay, who investigate the construction of their identity; how it is affected by their individual contexts, and the burden of their relatives and ancestors.
About
Itinerant Exhibition UK / Paris / Uruguay 2017/201
Upwards, Downwards explores the bi-directional journeys of four contemporary artists from Uruguay (Lucia Ehrlich, Natalia de León, Maria Mascaró and Jessie Young) in their searches for an identity. By scrutinising the relationships between their pasts, presents and futures, and how these influences their individuality, the artists highlight the importance of their family legacy and collective memory
Exploring the artists’ views, Upwards, Downwards will examine the atomic cocktail that haunts us as 'sons of' and 'citizens of', concealing the relationship between our genetic inheritance and cultural pressures.
Alongside the exhibition, a video-installation by young film-maker Ina López will be displayed presenting the artists’ works and main ideas.
The exhibition has the support of the Uruguayan Embassy in London and Paris and MEC (the Minister of Education and Culture in Uruguay). Special thanks to the British-Uruguayan Society, Wines of Uruguay, designer Emma Shearer and Griffin Gallery.
The project is promoted and organised by the CoCo art collective.
