About

The mix media collage series "Gini in a Bottle" deals with social inequality, multiculturalism and radical art. It features manipulated images from Reclaim Brixton event in April 2015, as well as the protest against HSBC and other capitalist institutions.

The series "Gini in a Bottle" collages are composed of skyscrapers, cityscapes of Canary Wharf, images of protest and the Gini index of inequality. The index was developed in 2012 by the Italian statistician and sociologist Corrado Gini. It has become the most prevalent measurement of inequality in the past 100 years. The UK, according to this index, is one of the leading countries in the world in inequality.

Gil Mualem Doron is an artist of boundary blurring and the challenging of signs that purport to construct the landscape of civil meanings. His work is multidisciplinary, socially engaged, activist and political, and combines research on art, architecture and urban culture. His artistic activities integrate various media, from drawing and photography to installations and performances, but they also include such trivial acts as walking, eating, demonstrating, burning, guiding, conversing, collecting garbage and donating blood. His works have been exhibited in galleries and museums, in magazines and books, in public spaces and in community and cultural institute in Israel and Europe. Mualem Doron has been awarded artist-in-the-community scholarships, the Henri Ford Conservation Award, and grants from the Arts Council of Great Britain. Still, his works are not easy to digest. Some have been confiscated, he was threatened for some of his political works, police were called to intervene in one of his performances, and the fire brigade were summoned to another.

The exhibition will also feature Mualem-Doron's recent artist book "Mind the Gap – Transgressive Art & Social Practices". A lecture about the book will be given on the 26th July at 2pm.
