Gill Hickman is a textural artist based in South East London who has been working as a professional artist since she left teaching in 1997. She draws inspiration from textures and patterns in the environment and from her daily meditation practice. 

Gill sees the act of creating the work as a meditation in itself. Each process involved in making each piece requires a meditative presence and focus: the folding and hand-tearing of the paper using a book-binder’s bone knife, the preparation of the special acid-free glue, and the delicate application of the gold leaf. 

Gill enjoys every stage of the process and the simple geometric shapes (circles and squares) she uses seem to communicate a powerful sense of wellbeing. Collectors often describe her works as “calming” and “uplifting” 

In addition to circles and squares, Gill also creates unique free form pieces, in which a textured meandering line traces a path or journey across a coloured paper background.

Gill uses quality materials including 24 carat gold leaf, fine mulberry papers from Thailand and Japan and richly textured hand-made cotton papers France. Each artwork combines these papers in unique ways and is individually embellished with gold, silver or aluminium highlights.

Gill Hickman has been Artist/Director of Skylark Galleries London since 1999, she also facilitates weekly meditation classes in SE London.

At her “Meet the Artist” days at our gallery in OXO Tower Gill will bring samples of the beautiful papers she uses for visitors to touch and handle.
