About

On the occasion of this exhibition in the A60 place located in Florence, the Chinese artist Ou Wenting presents a collection of photographic works together with two videos, made in 2020. The 3D creations of the artist who elaborates organic forms inserted in the interior of an ambiguous landscape, they immediately appear very curious, sometimes giving the impression of seeing a seabed. The shapes created by Ou Wenting reduce the natural dimension to a scheme, a synthesis, however, in the contamination of nature with the world of machines, almost always appearing in pairs as if to underline the need for a relationship. But all this is illusory  because these forms represent only symbols of something that existed and that is re-proposed in a robotic, cold, static way: certainly very aesthetic and formal, not stranger to the world of Design.

The artist "had fun" in proposing these images that appear almost aesthetically perfect toys, cared for, designed but which do not speak of the natural world (in one work we also observe the presence of an organic creature characterized by a large human mouth of surreal taste). The "Series X and Y" cycle, which also includes the shapes of the video, speaks around to the concept of a rational schematization that man would like to impose, reducing the natural component to a mere mechanical fact.

In my opinion, here consists the criticism that Ou Wenting puts in the field, even if the forms could be read in a purist and decorative direction. On the other hand, all this appears manifested in the video images created where the memory (in the first video) of organic shapes (roots or branches) lives in a dance with an hard and mechanical sound. It is a dance that stuns and rejects. Also in the second video work, the figurative suggestion leads us to imagine the dance of a dancer who moves in a convulsive rhythm with no escape, without humanity and slowdown, until exhausted, accustoming our feeling to a music that cannot unite but on the contrary, leads the forms to move away, until the final separation
