Surface Gallery introduces Uncanny Beginnings, an exhibition by second-year photography students from Nottingham Trent University.
About
Surface Gallery is pleased to announce Uncanny Beginnings, an exhibition by second-year photography students from Nottingham Trent University.
Inspired by Sigmund Freud’s seminal essay, “The Uncanny” (1919), the collection of work explores themes of the uncanny, a key 20th century philosophical and psychological concept. The work presents a critically informed and visually compelling analysis of the eerie and un-homely aspects of human perception, but also integrates a broad range of cultural influences that interrogate such “uncanny” subject matter as gender roles, temptation, anxiety, and mystery.
Uncanny Beginnings will be showing on Surface Gallery’s top floor Project Space in conjunction with the final week of the International Postcard Show 2016 in the Main Gallery. Gerry Henegan-Barr’s exhibition Bestial Supremacy: It’s Reigning Cats Not Dogs will continue in Surface Gallery’s alternative exhibition space, Le Loovre. As always, there will be a donations bar with ales from local brewery, Springhead.
