About
Beadwork is a skill practiced by women in South Africa for centuries. Traditionally used to adorn the body, beadwork communicates messages about the wearer's life status through colour and form. UBUHLE gives new life to this traditional art through the creation of light paintings that are sometimes figurative and that feature a multitude of abstract symbols in brilliant colours. Inspired by nature and the botanical photographs of Karl Blossfeldt, ASTRID DAHL creates monumental ceramic sculptures that are based on small details of flowers, leaves, seeds and the nature that surrounds her. Like macro photography, her abstract sculptures reveal the beauty of the often overlooked details of nature. Exhibited for the first time in France, works by some of these artists are part of the permanent collections of the Smithsonian Institution and other museums in the United States.
